Why Amper exists.

Amper builds electric-vehicle-charging infrastructure for African grids.

The company exists because two structural problems — the way African households charge EVs and the way African utilities see EV load — need solving now, and won't be solved by tools built for European or North American markets.

The residential problem.

Domestic sockets and residential wiring were not designed for the sustained current an EV pulls overnight. As EV adoption accelerates across the continent, the majority of first-generation drivers charge at home on standard 13-amp sockets, with real fire risk, no way to allocate cost between household members or landlords, and no way for the utility to see the load. Wallboxes and Level 2 chargers built for European homes do not fit the wiring, the housing model, or the economics of the median African EV driver.

The utility problem.

African distribution utilities are absorbing EV load with no visibility, no pricing tool, and no way to plan capacity. Meters were not designed to distinguish an EV from a refrigerator. Networks were not designed to survive a coordinated overnight EV peak. The regulatory frameworks that let European and North American utilities offer a differentiated EV tariff or run managed charging programmes do not yet exist in most African markets — and building them requires trustworthy metering data the current infrastructure cannot produce.

What we build.

Amper is building three layers to close the gap.

At the device layer, small inline units sit between a household socket and a portable EV charging cable, monitoring for fire risk in real time, cryptographically signing every kilowatt of energy consumed, and cutting power automatically if things go wrong.

At the platform layer, every session, every event, every signed record is ingested into a canonical data model that treats every EV — household adapter, commercial AC wallbox, fleet DC fast charger — as one energy asset, one auditable record, one place to see load across the network.

At the grid-intelligence layer, the signed data becomes the tools a utility actually needs — differentiated EV tariff enablement, load forecasting per feeder, managed charging during peak windows, and compliance reporting for regulators.

Every layer is designed for the operating reality African grids actually face: intermittent connectivity, offline safety, brownout tolerance, and prepaid metering integration.
